Brian had watched Rachel on the other side sway to

the music and the dancing. She’s getting into it, he had

mused, and had loved it. He did not mind that she was

on her third bottle of beer. ‘Who’s that man dancing?

Eish he’s a show off,’ Brian had asked Mlindos who

was handing him another beer.

‘Oh that one, he’s a kite. But never let him near

your woman. He’s a razor,’ chuckled Mlindos bobbing

his head in quiet salutation to the dancing man.

Brian knew clearly what Mlindos meant. He knew

he wouldn’t dare let his woman next to that man. The

way he was dancing and moving his waist. No, never.

As if to go and protect Rachel, Brian had excused

himself and went over to Rachel. ‘You alright babe?’

‘Yeah I’m loving this...check out the dances!’

Rachel had almost shouted into Brian’s ear leaving it

wet and ringing. Brian had looked at her and noticed

that she was only managing a sleepy gaze now as her

thin frame gawkily swayed side to side.

‘You’re drunk,’ he had said out loud enough that

only Rachel could hear. When Brian had tried to move

Rachel to the side so he could keep a closer eye on her

and maybe warn her not to drink anymore, she had

shrugged him off and staggered to the dance floor with

her arms raised up in the air.

‘Oliver, Oliver, Oliver Twist!’ Rachel was singing

as she approached the man in denim. She swung her

arms from left to right swaying to the Nigerian beat.

Very few found it easy to resist the music. They soon

joined in the dance floor, but what seemed to draw a

lot of attention was the way Rachel occasionally

dropped to a squatting position as she twisted to the

floor. She would come up pretty fast from the floor,

sway a bit from side to side and drop down equally fast.
